David has more than 30 years’ experience advising businesses, developers, landowners and public sector organisations on commercial property, land development and infrastructure projects. His expertise covers acquisitions and disposals, leases and licences, development agreements, access and easement arrangements, planning matters and complex property transactions. His work also includes advising on projects within the telecommunications, renewables and infrastructure sectors.

David works closely with organisations responsible for managing property portfolios, operational facilities and infrastructure projects, helping leadership teams balance commercial objectives with operational requirements, stakeholder interests and long-term strategic goals.

Clients value David’s ability to combine deep technical expertise with practical commercial judgement. He is known for providing clear, pragmatic advice and building strong relationships with the individuals and organisations he supports. TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT YOUR CAREER TO DATE / IN LAW?

My career began with Morgan Bruce back in 1994 and I then founded my own firm, MLM Cartwright, in 2001. In 2016 we were acquired by Hugh James, where I became an equity partner and head of the Telecoms practice.

AND YOUR CLIENTS?

My clients are typically mobile phone operators, investors and site owners. My clients are also involved with the development of the renewables sector, like wind power and solar energy generation.

WHAT DO YOUR CLIENTS LIKE ABOUT YOU AND THE WAY YOU WORK?

It’s trite to say but my clients like three things – that I know the law that’s relevant to what they want to do, that I am by instinct a commercial thinker and it’s fun to work with me. At the end of the day, it’s all about relationships!

The people. I love the people who work in the law and have made some wonderful relationships. My fascination is with how we can make things work so applying that to areas like Telecoms, Energy Generation and how we use the land is very satisfying.

AND WHEN YOU ARE NOT WORKING?

I love cars and have a modest collection. It’s the engineering that I appreciate. I am also a bit of a collector – matchbox cars being a favourite, among others. Throw in time with family and friends and some travel and you’ve got me.
